Project Description
SEND A SEED provides women crops growers with indigenous seeds. The women sow, cultivate and after the harvest provide the same amount of seeds that they were given, to other women. They use the remaining seeds for the next growing season, for basic food needs and the rest for selling to generate extra income.
Project Background
Under the auspices of the Mparo People’s Projects the Send a Seed project was initiated by and for the women peasants in Mparo Parish, Rwamucucu Sub-county Rukiga-Kabale in South Western Uganda. The project is a multipurpose project helping to economically empower women at the same time protecting the environment and reducing the consumption of meat based foods.
In the face of the ever growing power and influence of multinational organizations and companies promoting and selling genetically modified seeds which cannot produce seeds farmers are being forced to continue buying seeds for cultivating basic foods . The purpose of the project is to insure the reproduction of regional indigenous vegetable seeds and increase their availability.
The goal of the project also enables to ensure a source of basic food for the participating small farms and at the same time creating an extra as source of income thus economically empowering women participants.
The project also helps directly and indirectly promote plant based food as an alternative to slaughtering animals as source of food. The project also promotes veganism and vegetarianism as most members are either vegan or vegetarian.
Project participants also use natural self produced organic manure which does not contain chemicals. The use of these organic fertilizers improve the soil and at the same time protect the environment.
Since September 2018 the women peasants started with indigenous bean and maize seeds. As the small farms have a good harvest of these two seeds it provides a reasonable diet source and enables food sovereignty.
Since 2018 local and regional vegetable growers now have easy access to quality indigenous seed from the projects participants seed. Buying from seed producers within the community means farmers buy only the quantity required for a particular season or
plot and therefore, have the flexibility to operate with the resources available to them at any particular time.
