GoAgro Kabale Project

GO AGRO KABALE –UGANDA

Project Description.

Go Agro Kabale –Uganda is a crop-growing project based in Kabale District of Uganda and near Kabale Municipality. It is located in the suburb area and serves the urban poor and slum dwellers of Kabale Municipality and nearby communities. Our location along a high way that connects Uganda to Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo as well as inland towns and cities of Uganda such as Kisoro, Mbarara, Kampala and Kasese give us an advantage of big market.

Also there are many tourists that pass along on their way to see the Mountain Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi.

We deal mainly in growing and production of Beans, maize, peas, Irish potatoes and several types of vegetables such as cabbages, cauliflower, tomatoes, spinach and onions.

Background and Objectives of the Project.

Realizing that most of the plant food feeding the majority of the dwellers of Kabale Municipality, its suburbs and nearby community come from very far way distances beyond 80 kilometers and thus making the food expensive and arriving when it is no long fresh, we decided to form this project in 2019 to provide very fresh plant and vegetable foods to the dwellers of Kabale municipality through this project where the individuals and crop vendors can easily come to the project and buy directly fresh seeds and vegetables.

The other objectives were as follows:

To provide the project members with food security, way of income, protect the environment through crop growing as well as turn non arable land to arable land.

The crops being grown and produced under natural conditions also help to serve as well as medicine in addition to being food-thus promoting the Let- your- food -be -your -medicine health campaign.

Naturally made and organic fertilizers using farm yard and compost manure and other plant and soil parts are used and no harmful pesticides and herbicides are used. This makes our food SAFE AND HEALTH.

The project also serves for training and as demonstration gardens for schools in and around Kabale Municipality and as crop farmers and peasants in Kabale town.

It also serves as source of food for sale to the education and health institutions,

Hotels and homes.

Crop Yield- The crop yield is high because of having made the soils fertile and appropriate for the crops we are growing. We do crop rotation, irrigation when and where necessary, do proper spacing of the crops, we manage pests and diseases as well as weed and good post harvest management by:

  1. Handling harvested crops carefully to minimize damage.
  2. Storing crops in optimal conditions to prevent spoilage and losses. Presently the crop yield is at about 10 times the invested seeds and related capital. We use professional agricultural experts to supervise the gardens/crops. Utilize appropriate processing and packaging methods to maintain crop quality.

The Production Cost- is low because; the project is worked on and managed by the members themselves, also natural organic fertilizers produced locally from farmyard and compost manure is used and not purchased artificial fertilizers. We also maintain records of activities.

Input efficiency- We improve the input efficiency of the crops by optimizing the use of resources such as water, fertilizers and labor to maximize crop yield and quality while minimizing waste and environmental impact. Presently considering all parameters that improve input efficiency we are at 75%.

The Project is economically Viable-as it is presently at about 10 times the invested seeds and related capital. This can be improved with more invested capita l.

Employment and Social impact: Most of the people in the community especially those with no professional qualifications and formal education have opportunity to get employment. Most children have been maintained in schools. Members are able to pay hospital bills and road network has been improved to ease collection of crop produce.
